Sure you can but why bother with JavaScript?  You can just call the
servlet, have it get the data, create a cute bean full of data, call JSP
give it the bean and have it populate the form and return to you without
a sign of JS.

This way you don't have to worry about browsers handling JS differently

Also the servlet will only return text to you and not even an array.
Whole table as text which you have to parse in JavaScript.  Depending
you the size of the table it may take a while on a slower computer.
