I recommend you break the problem down into its constituent parts.
Try doing just uploads and see if the files are uploaded byte-for-byte
correctly. Then try generating thumbnails from images already on the
server. Continue this bifurcation until you have identified the part
of the system that causes the failures. I'm interested to know what
you find.
