One approach would be to use a multi-tiered solution, where Excel and a your
Java-COM server ran on an NT machine, and your servlet made RMI calls to it.
Excel can function in this manner as a faceless server, because it is a COM
Automation object. You can even instruct it to save a file to a networked
location so that the Servlet can pick up the file later.

IBM alphaWorks has a JavaBean that communicates with Excel, if you want a
demonstration of the COM aspect of this idea.

Another (more complicated, more expensive) solution is to use a Java-CORBA-COM
architecture. Your Java Servlet on Solaris makes CORBA calls to an Excel stub
in a Naming Service that was generated on-the-fly by VisualEdge's ObjectBridge
(a COM-CORBA bridge).

David.
