A detailed answer to this question would require some knowledge of how SMTP
actually works (read RFC 821 and 822 if you are really interested).

Basically, JavaMail's SMTP provider by itself does not know how to resolve email
addresses, forward messages for an alias mailbox name, expand mailing list
groups, queue messages when the destination server is down, or anything like
that.  It relies on the SMTP server you configure it to contact (such as
sendmail or MS Exchange) to do this kind of stuff.
