Also it's faster and simpler using just the browser (sans applets)
and to me that means better.

What you have to do is accept the restrictions and be a little
creative. Servlets can help because they can respond very quickly
(given the right engine) and therefore it is possible to have
interactivity without applets (or even too much JS).
