Muly,
It really depends on what you're trying to do and what your current
architecture is. Generally speaking, having your servlet runner and
application server as one app simplifies administration, and if they're on
the same box, is presumably faster. However, the reason WebLogic and others
also provide plug-ins is because most places already have a standard web
server, and not everyone can change that. A particular site may have a
heavy investment in Apache, IIS, or NES, and for these sites, using a
plug-in is a better alternative. It just depends on your needs. Also,
sometimes the built-in HTTP servers aren't as feature-rich as the others
(although WebLogic's server is quite capable, and WebSphere ships withan
IBM-branded Apache). I think generally it's best to choose an application
server vendor (and there are quite a few besides BEA and IBM) based on the
implementation of the most important piece -- in this case, the EJB
services (and perhaps JSP and servlets). Think of the web server as a
separate piece, and if the app server you choose has a preferred web
server, look into that first. FYI, from my preliminary analysis, I think
WebLogic's web server is actually quite capable.

Subject: Application Server as a Web Server or as a Plug-In?
Hi
I am confused about the role of a web server vs application server in a
Servlet environment.
When installing application server like WebLogic or Orion what is the role
of a Web server like Apache, or application server totally replace the role
of the web server?
In the WebLogic page
(http://www.beasys.com/products/weblogic/server/datasheet.html) there is a
picture, which shows that WebLogic can be deployed as a Web Server or can
be
used as a Plug-In to other Web Server like NES, IIS or Apache.
What is the advantage of deploying as a Plug-In over working as a Web
Server, What it says about other Application Servers that can't work as a
Plug-In?
Regards,
Muly.
