We're looking for a servlet engine that can be deployed as a farm (behind a
local redirector or something similar).

The Apache JServ project seems to be able to run with multiple Apache
instances but sessions are tied to specific instances of Jserv. I haven't
looked at what Resin offers in this context, but I'm guessing it's similar.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a 2.1 or greater servlet engine,
commercial or free, that supports farming with sessions not tied to
particular instances?

We basically put a simple key into our session data and leave it at that so
propagating the information shouldn't be too heavyweight.
