A singleton class is a class with only 'one instance' , It is often provided
globally so that it can be shared / accessed from anywhere in an
application. An example of this is the java.lang.Runtime class (this has
one instance throughout the java virtual machine).
A common use for a singleton is to allow an item/items to be tracked
troughout the application.
