You know, this list has been in existence for a while, and some of
these things were hashed out and decided a long time ago (in Internet
time :-). For example, product and job announcements are allowed, as
long as they are concise and infrequent, and they really are
*announcements* and not advertisements/marketing propaganda. This was
in the list charter/rules/FAQ, such as it was. I poked around Sun's
servlet pages, and Sun's list archive pages, and couldn't find it;
James Davidson, who was the list administrator for a while, used to
send out a weekly reminder with the info, but that hasn't gone out for
a while (I know James has moved on to other things).

Regarding another similar hot issue, I don't think there's anything
official in the charter regarding how to deal with off-topic posts,
although in the past the list administrator (again, James Davidson)
did threaten to remove people for off-topic posts (especially when
they specifically mentioned beforehand that it was off-topic :-), and
did encourage self-policing on the list.
