how did you start the server?
1. as NT service? run from menu? then check "wlconfig" cmd, see if the
property weblogic.system.home is already there. (it should be there if you
installed it correctly...)
2. from script startWebLogic.cmd. although I don't see the reason why
weblogic complains about the home setting if you start it from script, try
add an option on the cmd line: java ....
-Dweblogic.system.home=D:\weblogic510 ... weblogic.Server
