The Thumb rule for putting the code is as such     :

1.If it is more HTML than java code ,we are better off putting it in a JSP.
2.If it is more JAVA than html code,we are better off putting it in a
SERVELET.

JSP's and SERVLETs help to distribute the tasks in a project.
