Session objects only affect scalability to the extent that you let
them.

I'm the architect for a web based email app that has over a million
users and that can handle about 1000 concurrent sessions per box.

It uses JRUN and Sparc kit and it's not really a big deal.

Sessions only get unmanagable if you let them. Design your app right
and they will be fine.
