Hi all,
One more point to add.
In the excel file u have to select all the required rows and colums
and define a name.
        (select Insert/Name/Define.. menu)
The "name" which have given will act as the table.
The column names will be the contents of the first row.

        Hi Sateesh:
Eventhough I am a novice here, I did this just yesterday and it
worked.
The trick is to use a JDBC-ODBC bridge(JDBC API).
1.Go to the control panel of you Win98/NT and double-click ODBC
icon.
        2.Click on Add
3.Select the MS Excel ODBC and click OK
4.Write the name of your excel file and add a description
5.Follow the rest of the instructions till finish.
        .
        .
        .
11.Using the JDBC API write an application to connect to your excel
file.
You can use SQL commants in your application to manipulate your
database as
        usual.

I hope this answers your question.
        Have fun!!
        Eric
