We came across the same issue when doing the connection pooling for
Expresso, our open source web-app framework. We solved it by allowing the
user to specify in a property file a "test" query - something that would
definitely prove the DB was alive, but that was inexpensive. Depending on
the particular DBMS, this could be something like "select 0", that kind of
thing. This also allows the sys admin to leave it blank for situations where
you don't want the testing to occur. Works pretty well for us, and of course
you're welcome to the open source Expresso code at our site
