I am not sure I see what the problem is with silly posts. Usually nubie
questions are apparent from their subject headings and can be skipped. And
where would we draw the line? At "What is a CLASSPATH?", or might we make
everyone submit an affidavit swearing that they have read Rusty Harold's
book cover-to-cover before they can post? I suppose that as much as human
nature dictates a certain percentage of silly posts, it also dicates a
certain percentage of intolerant readers.
That said, I think someone at Sun should be filtering out the more
egregious examples of silly or off-topic posts and privately sending the
posters a standard reply that politely states list policy and provides some
basic info and links that can help nubies help themselves. Or if this too
much like censorship, such posts could be left up, but clearly marked
[NUBIE] or [OFF-TOPIC], with a standard reply made to the whole list.
I am only guessing, but I think Sun would just have to get a little closer
to real-time with an analysis that is already being done there anyway. As
it is, to get something out of this list, someone at Sun must carefully
dredge the posts for useful information. I guess this because I think that
Sun as a corporate entity stands to gain enough from widespread acceptance
of servlet technology and a clear idea of what is wrong with it in practice
to support that effort, and could gain even more by supervising it on a
frequent/continual basis.
I do not think I have seen any Sun input on this topic, yet. Anybody at Sun
care to make some remarks?
