The alternative servlet engine they mention is probably Tomcat.
I'd just go to the apache.org web site, and click into the jakarta section.
>From there, download the latest distributions and install them. Setting up
your machine's environment will be detailed for both apache and tomcat, with
integration of the two detailed in the tomcat doc.
Tomcat will do JSP and Servlets. The mod_servlet that the article talks
about doesn't support JSP to the best of my knowledge. Additionally, Tomcat
is becoming the sanctioned "reference implementation" for servlets and jsp,
just like the Java Web Server has been in the past.
If you run into snags, usually because the Apache documentation is complete
but assumes a non-beginner as a reader, searching the archives for this
group and usenet in general should answer pretty much any problems which
arise.
Best,
Steven

Hello There
The only help I can offer is this snippet which I found in an article
recently, afraid I can't remember where:
Setting up servlets
The first step to developing with servlets is to get the servlet development
kit (JSDK) from JavaSoft and install it (instructions are included with the
package).
To enable Apache for servlets, get the latest version of the server and
install the servlet module. JavaSoft provides mod_servlet.c with the JSDK,
but for use with Apache 1.2.x you'll have to patch it. The patch is
available from Apache Week, a weekly guide for Apache users. There is also
an alternate servlet module under development by the Apache group.
Hope this is of some help.
