If your applet is running in an ssl
supporting browser, and the
page the applet is in was loaded
via https (also the applet classes
and jars)- then you can 'just'
open an https:// url in your applet.
This uses the browser's security
provider and (even better) the
browser's certificates.

The above seems not to apply to
versions of the plugin before 1.3.
