Sorry for the late response ... I was travelling to London for ApacheCon
and
then involved in meetings.
Please feel free to use any of the software on the jakarta.apache.org
site, as
long as you conform to the requirements of the Apache Software License.
For
your purposes, that specifically includes both Tomcat and the
implementation of
the servlet API classes found in the "jakarta-servletapi" CVS module.
Although
Sun continues to own the servlet and JSP specification itself, these
implementation classes were contributed to Apache along with the
original
Tomcat code. This is also the source for the servlet.jar file that
ships with
Tomcat itself.
In addition, if you make any modifications to Tomcat that would be of
interest
to the general community, it would be appropriate to consider whether
you would
wish to contribute those changes back.
