This is not correct. "Encoding" could mean anything, but the standard
meaning of "URL Encoding" in the HTTP world, as indicated by the
URLEncoder (and URLDecoder) class, is to modify the URL (usually the
query string or the path info portion of it) so that problematic
characters are removed, like spaces and such. This allows the URL to
be passed, parsed, and interpreted as desired. Spaces are replaced by
'+'s, and other characters are replaced by "%XX", where "XX" are the
last two hex digits of the characters' UNICODE/ASCII value (or
something like that). Check the source for URLEncoder/URLDecoder.
URL Rewriting is part of the servlet spec, available as an alternative
means (other than cookies) of associating a request with a session, by
including the session id in the URL. There are methods in the servlet
API that facilitate this. More info is available in the servlet spec
and API.
