I tried what you suggested me in vain.
I added the following to the SnoopServlet example in Tomcat:

getServletContext().log(" this is a test to see if I can log");
    System.err.println(" I am in snoop servlet");
        System.out.println(" I am in Snoop");
        PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
        response.setContentType("text/plain");
code//....
