I don't think there is a right answer that is true in all circumstances -- it
depends on the network environment you are running in, because of the response
time issues.

* If my server is in the middle of the US, and my client
  is accessing it across the Internet, from Australia,
  via a 28.8k modem, response time delays for the multiple
  trips are going to be noticed.

* If my server is on the same 100 megabit LAN segment
  that the client is on, you probably won't be able to
  see it.

Even in the former extreme, it *might* still be acceptable, if your client is
willing to be patient enough.  Or, if the only alternative is to send complete
page refreshes instead of just updating a small amount of data, doing multiple
updates might still be faster.

So I guess it all kinda depends ... :-)
