hi guys, i am trying to use ftgate mailserver in order to implement a mailing list. i am supposed to build a mailing list as part of my college course and so have no server setup and i have not bought any domain name. My ISP is VSNL.My username for the vsnl account is [EMAIL PROTECTED] And i want to use my hotmail account for the mailing list. now comes the problem, i dont know how to configure the mail server. Before installing the mail server onto your system i need to fill in the following : 1. TCP/IP networking installed on the machine that will run the mail server and on any machine that will be required to access the mail stored in the mail server. 2. The name or IP number of your ISP SMTP mail server. 3. Your primary domain name (the bit after the @ in your email address) I cant figure out what to fill in the above, maybe someone who has used mailservers before can help me out also if you cant tell me where i can find some relevant information about implementing mailing lists,i will be obliged. Thanking u in advance. here is the explanation i got from the manuals FTGate version 2.2 Reference Manual This dialog allows you to configure your default mail gateway and temporary mail folder. Gateway Machine This is the machine to which you will normally deliver outgoing mail. This machine should act as a relay server for your site. The name is normally supplied by your ISP. If you are unsure of the name to use you can look in your mail client software for the SMTP server settings or ask your ISP. Note: If you are intending to use MX record delivery you should leave this box empty and after installation complete the MX Delivery Properties. Directory This is the directory into which FTGate will store mail messages. 2 This dialog allows you to configure the way in which FTGate will connect to the internet. Use a direct LAN connection This option should be chosen if your connection to the internet is by a permanent LAN connection. Use a dialup router or proxy server This option should be chosen if your connection is handled by a dialup router or proxy server. Use the following dialup profile This option should be chosen if you want FTGate to manage the dialup connections using a profile on the local machine. 3 This dialog allows you to configure your domain. The domain is used to determine which messages are addressed to a local FTGate user and which are addressed to remote Internet users. If you are using a shared domain (i.e. there are mailboxes for non local systems with the same domain, e.g. hotmail.com or yahoo.com), you should enter the shared domain and configure the unknown mail handling to forward to the Internet. See Domains Properties Page Primary Domain Name Your primary domain name ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and include in the body of the message "signoff SERVLET-INTEREST".
