My initial guesss would be yes, but be aware I haven't tried this.
you can use https in the applet. This implies however that you are able to
download the JSSE, and that they are trusted by the client. The applet could
then open an https connection to the server. This is relatively easy in
standalone clients, as I said above I haven't tried it with applets,
