Because multiple paths wouldn't work.
Imagine: You have two document roots like /apache/htdocs and /MyDocuments/
and You type in
www.domainname.com/index.html
Which index.html should the server send ?
/apache/htdocs/index.html or /MyDocuments/index.html
Confusion would be the result.
Therefore every directory has to be a subdirectory of DocumentRoot. So
/apache/htdocs/index.html would be resolved in
www.domainname.com/index.html and
/apache/htdocs/company/index.html would be resolved in
www.domainname.com/company/index.html
What is Your specific need for multiple folders ?
