This all seems correct.
Do you have access to a Linux (or other un*x) box. If you do try and
get hold of netcat. It's a very usefull debugging tool that can
pretend to be a server.
If you setup netcat so that it listens on your server port and point
your applet at it you should see the content of the request.
That will allow you to debug.
