A servlet container is another name for a Java application server. Since the
name "server" is over used, the term "container"
was coined in order to help remove some of the ambiguity. Since Java
application servers "contain" servlets that are deployed, the
term "container" aptly describes its function.

A servlet container is also known as a servlet engine.

Servlet containers are required for running servlets and JSPs.

This is a really basic question, you should try looking in some of
the resources and FAQs about servlets because this group does not
really exist to teach everyone who comes to it everything about
servlets.
