I'm just setting up Tomcat with Apache and came accross this in the docs
(regarding the reasons for replacing mod_jserv with mod_jk):

"better support for SSL. mod_jserv couldn't reliably identify whether a
request was made via HTTP or HTTPS. mod_jk can, using the newer Ajpv13
protocol."

Not sure how relevant this is to you, thought I'd share anyway : )
