It depends on the JVM. If you're using a Sun JVM, check
out the "Tool Documentation" section of the SDK Doc main
page. 1.3, for example, has:
java -Xrunhprof
runhprof has a bunch of options, but one of them gives
you a dump of heap usage (what's alive, where it was
allocated, etc) try -Xrunhprof:help for details.
