An interesting, well written and informative posting Max.

However, I think I speak for most or all Webmasters when
I say that we have plenty to do and you won't be making
friends with yours if you are requesting stuff like setting
file permissions very often. This can easily be done by any
user with an FTP account using any decent FTP software.
In WS-FTP Pro (and why would anyone use anything else?)
you simply single left click highlight the file you wish to change
permissions for, then right click and select "chmod (UNIX)"
and click the appropriate RWE selections in the pop-up table.
Admittedly, it only works on UNIX/LINUX servers, but again,
why would you use anything else? (heh) I have also used
CoffeeCup FTP and it has a similar feature, as does Cute FTP.
 If your FTP software doesn't support this feature, do your
Webmaster a favor and  consider upgrading to one that does.
If your Webmaster is using NT, do yourself a favor and
consider upgrading to a smarter Webmaster...T
