If you've got the time try downloading Bruce Eckel's thinking in Java
(http://www.bruceeckel.com).  The best thing is the e-version of the book is
free.  Not to mention it's not a bad book either.  There is an assumption
that you've programmed in something before (C is mentioned a lot) so it's
not an absolute beginners book, but it'll get you started.  I got his CD and
I can say it helped a lot in the transition between Pascal/C and Java.

Also it helps me to think of objects like bags.  In C you'd have a bag of
variables and a bag of functions.  In Java you have one bag called an object
that holds your variables and your functions (now methods).  The vars and
methods are linked together to get you a greater level of abstraction.
