this question has been asked several times, so there should be some useful
information in the list's archive (link below).
in the java tutorial there's a chapter "Custom Networking" which also
contains advice on how to let a applet and a servlet communicate (especially
"Reading from and Writing to a URLConnection" should be interesting). go to
java.sun.com to find the tutorial.
