Hi,
The simplest way is to open the file, locate the Image Width and Image
Height tags/markers and read them. The GIF 89a specfication will be very
helpfull to achieve this (very simple) goal :
http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/pbourke/dataformats/
For JPEG, you will find a description of the markers used to encode width
and height at :
http://neptune.netcomp.monash.edu.au/cpe3013/JPEG/Reading/jfifHeader.htm
See also the JPEG FAQ :

Objet : Trivial Question
Hi,
I have uploaded images, but need to determine width and height properties. I
have tried to find standard classes that load jpg/gif but cannot.
Cheers
