tomcat not working

I have compiled apache(1.3.20) with php(4.0.6), ming and interbase, using linux Conectiva 6.0. installed j2se 1.3.1, which seems to work (i made the helloworld tutorial work) but when i start tomcat it says: JAVA_HOME is not defined. how can I solve it?   Thaks for the advice.
