Some of what you say sounds about right. Nothing stops you from developing on the RI and deploying on something else -except maybe minor compatibility issues that you may run into.
AFAIK no one has told the jBoss group they're doomed. If the original poster is very certain of that then maybe he should pass on that information to the group. I personally have no concerns that my App/WebServer of choice are still going to be around. On the other hand Lutris did just stop their open source project. . . apparently some financial concerns.
