in jsp you have a preinstantiated object with name 'application' like there is 'session'. both are prepared by your container and both provide the functionality of attaching name->value associations but with different scope! Session is user specific and application can be accessed by all servlets/jsp's in the same web-app. You can use 'application' for your counting (think it's of type ServletContext but im not sure.)
