Craig McClanahan did a presentation at O'Reilly's Java2001 (Enterprise Java) conference that had a section that I think did a very good job of covering many/most/all of the available options for handling this. The slides are available online. Go to http://conferences.oreilly.com/java2001/ then click on "Download Presentation" in the left margin. That takes you to an ftp directory where many/most/all of the presentations can be found. Craig's is McClanahan.sdd (the sdd extension is for Star Office, you may need that to look at it).
