I just finished Joshua Bloch's "Effective Java Programming Language Guide" (Addison Wesley, 2001) and he mentions using an analyzer to gauge performance somewhere (possibly in the section on optimization). Sorry to be so vague, but there's no reference to it in the index and I don't have the time to search for it.
