I once wrote a chat servlet that was indeed accessed via applet that did
pooling of messages once every couple of seconds. I don't think applet has
the proper privilages for opening JMS connections as it desires. It has to
be the same server where the applet came from, and there might be some
restrictions on the port, too.
JXTA is, too my opinion, an overkill. unless you want to support a
peer-to-peer environment. but that probably would not be needed, and might
be harder to implement. JXTA has just emerged.
I personally advocate the client-servet option. Client can be VB or any
other sort.

Several ways to do this.
The basic way is to use a java applet. This requires opening and closing of
sockets. Your server will then have to maintain these sockets.
Another, very very simple, way to do it is to use JMS and XML.
Another way to do it is a new thing called Project JXTA. I dont know much
about this but I think its pretty much the same as the JMS system.
Theres a code sample that you can download from the SUN JDC site. Part II is
suppose to cover Project JXTA but its not out yet.

I havent looked at it yet.. but if its posted.. it must be good :)
Just as a side note. Building a chat application via applet took me about 2
days for basic functionality. (login.. see whos available.. no private
rooms)
Building one with JMS took less than a day. It is a MUCH easier and cleaner
solution in my option.

Hi Guys,

I need to develop an IM Chat which should work similar to Aol or Yahoo so
how do go about this job. We will be having a seperate server for chat.
This is what our requirement is :
A prosective client comes to our site and clicks the chat link - it takes
him to a page where he can download our chat client and install it in his
system and talk to us.

So how do i go about doing this job.

Looking forward for you guys earliest response,

  With Regards,

karthikeyan.
