Thanks Richard I fixed the security problem by updating the machine's policy files - I also found out that signing the applet will have the same result for any user that accepts the certificate...
Pete P.S.: I didn't look straight away at security restrictions - e.g. the policy file - because the applet and the FTP connection were on the same host machine.
