I fixed the security problem by updating the machine's policy files - I also
found out that signing the applet will have the same result for any user
that accepts the certificate...

P.S.: I didn't look straight away at security restrictions - e.g. the policy
file - because the applet and the FTP connection were on the same host
machine. However, it seems that this is not enough when there are 2
different resources envolved - the Web Server that served the Applet, and
the FTP Server...

What exactly is the exception? You might want to use the Java console of
Netscape to show it.  You might need to edit the java.policy file to grant
the permission.  Try searching www.javasoft.com for the exception that you
are getting.
