The latest edition of PC Magazine (March 26, 2002) has a very complex review of commercial enterprise-level databases with MySQL (free) reviewed right along side of Oracle 9i ($40,000 per CPU) and MS SQL ($20,000 per CPU). MySQL did exceptionally well in performance, much to my surprise. Almost as well as Oracle (and twice as well as MS SQL with a Java application). The much lower rating (3 of 5) as compared to Oracle (5 of 5) was mostly due to the lack of management tools.
Take a look at the review at: http://www.pcmag.com/article/0,2997,s=0&a=23362,00.asp - Chuck -----Original Message----- From: A mailing list for discussion about Sun Microsystem's Java Servlet API Technology. Many different databases have their strengths and weaknesses. I suggest that you check out each database's website and read the articles and comments. Also do some searching on Google or another search engine. You'll find positive and negative comments that you wont find on the orginization's website. This should give you a good idea of which db to use for your needs and requirements. It all depends on what you're looking for. Just for note though MySQL is quite heavily used in many large production environments like Yahoo.com. It also won the highest marks for a non-comercial db in the latest eWeek database test. ~Matt Quoting "E.
