I'm replying to my own post... After reading the Javadocs for the Servlet api just a little more carefully, I've learned that setAttribute() is provided by ServletRequest class, and as such, is available to HttpServletRequest. No need for wrappers. Once I discovered that it worked first time!
I'm still curious about my other questions such as better/alternate methods of achieving the same thing. Craig, over on Tomcat-User list, suggested looking at Struts.
