fit into the compile scheme of servlets?

I note that scriptlet code (<%) get added to the service() method and that
declarations (<%!) result in global fields and methods outside of the
service() method...so how are tags handled in the JSP-to-servlet
transformation?  In what form do they exist in the resulting servlet?
