Anyone ever hear of 'call before you dig?' :).

When I was at the University of Hartford my senior year we had something
similar happen. A new decorative fence was being installed and the folks
doing the work decided to put the new fence in behind the old fence, instead
of taking the old fence down first (the two fences were identical in
appearance).

Needless to say, the few feet difference between the new and old fence was
enough to drive a fence post right through about 1500 pairs of copper trunk
cable.. Knocked out phone service for close to a week for most of campus.
Some poor guy had to come in with a replacement trunk cable and manually
connect the pairs. Needless to say, everyone's phone number was suddenly
different after the work was done :).

What's amazing is just how often this stuff happens. Technology is great
stuff until you cut the cable apparently :).
