Good Morning John,

I believe, by default, Windows XP Professional provides a built-in firewall
service for each new network connection you create. The firewall can be
turned off and I recommend you do so.

You're asking for trouble (and maddeningly quirky behavior) if you
simutaneously use XP's built-in firewall and a third-party firewall such as
ZoneAlarm. My understanding is that XP's firewall is nowhere near as
capable (or proven reliable) as ZoneAlarm Pro 2.6.362 or other third-party
software.

For what it's worth, I've got a brand new, unregistered copy of WinXP Pro in
my desk drawer and that's just where it's going to stay until Microsoft
solves the many issues that plague WinXP (maybe around Service Pack 2) and
loses the WPA (not likely). Besides, even when configured for performance,
WinXP is measurably slower than Windows 2000.

My experience with the beta, pre-release and RTM versions of WinXP made me
thankful that I own copies of Win2K and Win98.

Good luck ...

Very truly yours,
Jeffrey Ottie
