In the Mail settings page I enter the details exactly as they are in 1. OSX Mail, and 2. My organizations documentation: Server, Port, Username and password are correct. 
Using the mail function to, for example send a page results in:
Unable to send mail: (10053, 'Software caused connection abort')
-- This is my preferred email account

I try it with a personal email account (outside my organization)  and I get this:
Unable to send mail: (7, 'getaddrinfo failed') 
-- I understand this to be a firewall issue

But how may I get round this?
