Yes - IIS is thick, and does not know how to proxy, so the solution I
use is to move IIS to a non-standard port (9080), and install Apache.

Apache is clever, and can combine proxy and rewrite rules - so you can
have Apache on Port 80, and have it proxy/rewrite to both IIS and
Zope/Plone (The virtual host set-up for IIS is very similar indeed to
that documented for Plone).

The other issue you may have to contend with is "Socket Pooling", which
hogs Post 80 on all IPs for IIS's use - it can be turned off, but the
way to turn it off varies between Win2K Server and Win2K3 Server.
