The _owner of a process_ associated with Plone will typically have an environment that differs from the environment that you set for your _self_.
How you set the environment for Plone (to include what's required by SmartPrintNG) may vary according to platform etc.. As buildout is so often preferred, let's highlight the example buildout.cfg provided by the developer of SmartPrintNG: <http://opensource.zopyx.com/projects/SmartPrintNG/documentation> Within that example, we see the buildout-related lines that add to the environment for Plone the FOP_HOME that's required when you prefer FOP for SmartPrintNG. Hint: if your Fedora will be headless </chuckle>, then please be aware of <http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/0.94/graphics.html#batik>.
