Well, seems a little bit like I'm taking to myself, but I have made some
progress.

I dropped the idea of using simplon.plone.ldap, and instead just installed
the full PloneLDAP into my products folder. I then (using ZMI) installed
Plone LDAP Plugin into ***both*** by instance's acl_users folder (which
seems to get search, permissions, etc working in plone, but not auth)
***and*** the zope acl_users folder (parallel sibling to my instance). The
zope acl_users seems to be required to do the actual authentication. I have
all "plugins" under both ldap servers enabled. I had to do this to get
normal user's "preferences" and dashboard to show up.

Much closer, but still ... user can edit their profile (even though I set
ldap servers to read-only), and have a form to change their password. And
no attributes are displayed in a user profile ... not even email.

I am flying totally blind here, and getting things to partially work totally
by accident. I'd hope the authors of this ldap stuff would step up and
produce some better doc. LDAP problems seem to be a big part of the forum
discussions.
