being that your OS is better at scheduling processes than Python is at
scheduling threads.

Yup, make this as large as possible, and if you have a separate mount
point for the Catalog, it can keep it all in memory easily even on large
sites, which helps performance significantly.
I understand that each use case may be different but in terms of best
practice when optimising, what would one normally expect to produce the
best
(caching/ rendering time) results.
Right, there are lots of variables involved. I'm trying to nail down some
rules of thumb for a "performance tuning basics" manual on plone.org.
