You need access to the machine, but you don't need to be local.

Re. "seeing all their files via Zope" - I suspect that you have logged onto the ZMI, and are browsing the ZODB. If so, you need to understand that the ZODB is an object database, and that it resides in a file called Data.fs. Once you have figured out what in is Data.fs and what is on the filesystem, things will make more sense to you.

I don't have a lot of background in these things, so any help would be
greatly appreciated. Mostly I just want to be able to tell them "yes" or
"no" as to whether I can do what they want.

Assuming administrative control over the remote machine (the ability to stop and start Zope/Plone, and access the file system) it's definitely do-able.

I would suggest that you work locally until you are comfortable with Plone, so your first step would be to install locally the same version and in the same configuration (e.g. with the same products) as your client, and grab the Data.fs from the remote system.

Assuming that you can fire up Plone with that Data.fs in place, you'll then need to install the "target" version of Plone locally, in parallel to the "source" version.

You may need to deal with upgrading Plone products as well as Plone itself - is this site using any products over and above Plone, or is it a "vanilla" site?
